The Technology Revolution
“The ICT Technology is deep in cultural revolution, changing all modes and patterns of our lives and bound to lead to a dramatic change in our educational system.” (Becta, 2009, p.4).
We strongly concur with this statement made by Becta. Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine going through our daily routine without the help of technology. Through this technology revolution it affects children lives too. As we know, the environment of a child influences his/her behavior (Vygotsky’s Zon of Proximal Development). With the changes made in the technology revolution, a new behavior and new ways of working has been discovered (Becto, 2009). Children too, have shown new behaviors and interest. Therefore, we “must look for procedures and strategies [on] how to engage ICT so that we achieve our learning objectives more effective, authentic and actual way...” (Kalaš, 2010 p.20).
21st Century Skills and Learning
As we entered the 21st century, there were many changes and different needs. Due to the rapid changes we are unable to predict what the future is and what the needs of the future are. But we know we need to prepare our children for the future. To help our children, we need to cultivate the 21st century skills in them. The “21st century skills is generally used to refer to certain core competencies such as collaboration; digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving that advocates believe schools need to teach to help students thrive in today's world.” (How Do We Define 21st- Century Learning?, 2011, p.32).
Please be reminded that, “the importance of ICT [technology] for education is not base on the modern chips used in them but on the rich context they provide for activity of children and resulting cognitive development” (Kalaš, 2010 p.22).
